Chamber of Secrets - Part 2
Mr Chambers also gave us a good indication of what songs need lyrically, these days. In agreement with Robin Frederick, Guy suggests starting with a strong TITLE. 'Rock, DJ' for instance already starts you thinking, could have a double meaning, does it relate to Robbie and so on. Then, as with many models, KEEP IT SIMPLE!! 'Compress' the lyrics to sum up what your talking about, don't drag it out. Gary Osborne sights 'DELILAH' as an excellent example "She stood there laughing, I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more"!! You could go on forever describing the humiliation of laughter or how gruesome the stabbing was, but then again let the reader/listener do that for themselves. The other reason to Keep It Simple, is to make the lyrics memorable and to get your audience to sing along. It goes without saying that they have to be 'catchy' or 'hooky' so you'll need a good melody to do that.
